Time for me

As a mom, I often feel guilty taking time for myself. You would think that after signing the kids up for their activities, paying the registration and driving them around, I would allow myself “me time” more often.

As a coach, I hear the same line from my clients all the time… “I don’t have time for me” Just too busy being the worker, the mom, the cleaner, the cook, the taxi driver, the….(insert your list here 🙂 )

Anyhow, last Saturday, I had the perfect opportunity to do what I wanted to do for a whole morning and it was truly amazing.

Grandparents had the kiddos, hubby had signed up for a training so that left me, ONLY ME in the house!! It would have been easy to sleep in, relax and do nothing but instead, I used that time for something I enjoy doing.

I decided to set the alarm and get up early so I would enjoy the day and not rush. After a nice cup of coffee and a healthy breakfast I headed out to Normandale to bike on the Turkey Point Mountain Bike Club trails. Although I have been a recreational biker on roads and local trails for years, it wasn’t until this year that I set my wheel on a single track trail. The sun was shining, the weather was just perfect to head out on my own to explore a small part of the 80+km network of trails.

I am a beginner in this sport but so far, wow!  I absolutely love the thrill of riding! I was surprised to find out the concentration needed to ride. The turns are sharp, the roots offer challenge, the hills require “planning” and the buzz that comes from coming down fast is electrifying. You have to be in your zone and keep your eye looking ahead at every moment. No time to worry about stuff, life, bills, kids…. 100% of you attention is on the trail and what you are doing.

Saudwinder, The Burn, Spinal Tap, Dizzy Lizzy and out through Fin and Feather was my trail adventure for the morning. These are beginner and intermediate trails that offer a good variety of features to practise basic skills. The sweat was dripping down my back but I was feeling strong and just couldn’t stop smiling.

Time to pack up the bike and head for a little quiet time down at the Normandale Beach access. Super peaceful place, perfect for a short meditation. I sat on a rock feeling the wind on my face, the sun on my skin and focused on breathing for a few minutes. Just connecting to the place, the time and the sensations in my body.

Time to get moving but had a make a pit stop at Cider Keg’s Farmer’s Market on Highway 24. Fresh asparagus is in season and it tastes so yummy. Full of fiber, vitamins B, C and E – asparagus is a superfood! Left with local cucumbers and peppers, some cider and locally grown peanuts in my bag. I took the time to munch some of these while sitting with my feet up on their sunny patio, why not? I caught myself just sitting there, smiling like a weirdo but just being so thankful for my morning, for what Norfolk County has to offer and for the life I have created for myself.

Took a few more minutes to walk around the orchard, snap a few pictures and I was ready to head back to reality.

Actually, 1 more quick stop…. Almond Latte at Joy bakery in Simcoe to round off MY morning.

I deserve time for me and I have to make it happen for myself. It would be nice if someone “gave us permission” but the thing is, WE NEED TO CREATE THAT TIME FOR OURSELVES.

I know it will not happen every weekend because honestly, I love spending time with my family too. I am just thankful for the time that I had which I decided to use for things I love. Biking, fresh air, local produce, coffee and sunshine.

When are you getting out to do things you enjoy??
